A sick feeling of dread propels Chinonye Chukwu’s highly effective film: dread on the racist violence about to occur, dread on the racist violence that’s then threatened towards these standing up towards it. This movie is about Emmett Until, the black 14-year-old tortured and lynched in 1955 Mississippi for supposedly whistling at a white lady, whose testimony on the subsequent homicide trial was disputed. (The closing credit icily remind us that this lady continues to be alive.) It’s also concerning the boy’s mom Mamie Until, and her brave marketing campaign for justice, which started with a laceratingly painful resolution to have an open casket at her son’s funeral to indicate everybody the stunning reality.
Danielle Deadwyler performs Mamie Until, a peaceful, decided skilled lady and single mum or dad; Whoopi Goldberg has a cameo as her mom, Alma.
