Bronte Law celebrates victory in the Aramco Team Series.
Exclusive: Solheim Cup star Bronte Law on mental strength, equality and what golf can study on tennis
Bronte Law the most opinionated and golfers that are eloquent the women’s game right now. Her words pack a real punch whenever she feels strongly about something – and there are a lot of things she wants to get her chest off. She does not take care of platitudes and it is especially keen to create the record straight in regards to the influence that is saudi the LET, as well as the mental health struggles she and many of her peers face in today’s game.
We spent 20 minutes on a Zoom call with the LET that is two-time winner regarding the Aramco Team Series in Sotogrande with no subject was off limits.
You’ve probably been in charge of the largest drop that is‘mic moment this season when you holed a 55ft putt for eagle to win the Aramco Team Series – London event at Centurion Club. Be honest, you would have been happy with a two-putt, right?
Yeah, I would be telling fibs I knew I was going to do that if I said! I’ve actually had people show up if you ask me whom you wouldn’t be prepared to be watching golf and they’ve said, “I saw you will be making that putt” that is really long. It’s nice to see people recognising you and interest that is showing that’s what we’re trying difficult to achieve.
The Aramco Team Series is exclusive – the event that is first of kind. When you heard about the concept and the idea of professionals playing alongside amateurs and competing for a team and prize that is individual what were your initial impressions?
Before It had been experienced by me myself, I wasn’t really sure how it would work, but it’s pretty straightforward. I mean, you still play your own ball. But instead of feeling for yourself, it fosters a kind of camaraderie and you end up cheering each other on and giving fist bumps like you’re out there playing.
That dynamic is very different, nonetheless it’s a truly cool aspect rather than something we’re used to because we’re usually competing against one another. It generates a significant fun atmosphere because you’re giving amateurs a experience that is really cool.

There is another side to it because like LIV Golf, the LET is coming under scrutiny because of the investment that is saudi-backed Aramco. Exactly what are your thinking regarding the matter?
You are comparing apples to oranges. The LET wasn’t inside a position that is particularly strong COVID anyway. Aramco has stepped in to provide opportunities for women – which is one of the things that are main [Saudi Arabia] are criticised for – and it has added $5 million towards the prize fund when it comes to year.
All I’ve seen is just a willingness to place cash on the line which help women play professional golf. And I also don’t see a number of other brands that are big in and doing that. There are girls who have earned more money in the Aramco Team Series than they have in their career that is whole on LET.
The LPGA appears available to the thought of discussing a women’s same in principle as LIV Golf, which may begin to see the men’s and women’s events side that is running side. Do you think that’s a way that is good grow the video game?
I do not know about items that will be spoken about, but putting both women and men for a passing fancy stage – exactly like in tennis – is ultimately the only method individuals are actually likely to respect women with their capabilities and whatever they may do.

How tough can it be to create a surviving in the game that is women’s particularly on the LET where the prize funds are nowhere near as lucrative as they are on the LPGA Tour?
For the year, my expenses are around £100,000. If you don’t have that money in the bank, or you don’t have backing, then you need to take a loan out. You will find girls hiring cars and driving across many countries to obtain from 1 spot to one other to take the cost out of flights.
When you’ve got a purse that is €300,000, you are struggling to make money unless you’re finishing in the top 10. And they’re not cheap either if you do have a caddie. I know a lot of girls who have a job that is second winter months for them to pay their way at the beginning of next season. It’s a really thing that is real. I think that people underestimate how much it costs to do this job. The vast majority of girls are checking their bank accounts every other week to make sure they’ve got money that is enough make do.
Slow play is a topic that is hot the women’s game for a while. Just how bad is it?
I don’t think it’s just a problem in the game that is women’s the men got berated for how slow they played in the Open [several rounds exceeded six hours on the first day].
I think anytime it happens within the game that is women’s it’s like all anyone talks about. I don’t think the women are slower than the men. It is thought by me is talked about more about the women’s side but as a result of poor course setup. Following on from Muirfield this which course would you like to see added to the Women’s Open rotation?
I’d year want to see more links courses within the south ensure it is regarding the schedule. Most of the time, you can get better weather there that point regarding the year so it’d be cool to see some courses down there, merely to showcase how different the golf is playing that is there versus golf in Scotland. It is different. We tend to play a complete lot in Scotland plus in the northwest, least that is what I’ve experienced, therefore we sort of do this loop.
We are likely to play Walton Heath next which is obviously in the south of the country year. I’m not so sure it’s a golf that is links-style, however it’s an excellent golf course nonetheless and that’ll be cool featuring its vicinity near to London. Hopefully, it will probably obtain a turnout that is good well.
If you were given the opportunity to host a tournament on the LET, which course would you bring it to?
I’m going to contradict myself in the north west just because that’s where I’m from because i’d probably have it. I do believe there are always a complete lot of fantastic golf courses in that area. You’ve got that stretch around Birkdale, Hillside, Formby, Southport & Ainsdale. I actually used to be a known member at Hillside whenever I was younger. It could oftimes be one of those as the quality of golf for the reason that certain area is absolutely amazing.Best Links Golf Courses
Hillside’s back nine is one of my favourites and I just think links golf is the test that is ultimate. You’ve surely got to have so shots that are many your bag. It’s not just about hitting it straight, it’s about being able to control ball flight, be able to work it right to left and chip around the greens with various clubs. I think the kid because it makes it more fun.

Before your victory in the Aramco, your World Ranking had fallen below 100. Do you really look closely at things such as that or doesn’t it frustrate you?
Maybe a bit that is little but not really. Ultimately, I think you can find yourself chasing the unknown i’ve finished better than I’ve had two years before, and my rankings got worse if you look too much at rankings, I’ve had weeks where. it is not necessarily essential in regards to the way I set my goals.Jin Young Ko: ‘I train for golf like a fighter trains for a title bout’
How can you quantify success regarding the golf course?
By how frequently I pull off shots i will be attempting to hit. Often it comes down down seriously to a thing that is mental of I commit to that shot? Did it is hit by me the way I desired to, yes or no? It’s just like ticking a box. Most of the time you must glance at the things that are small claim victories as most of the time you are not winning.

Have you ever struggled with the side that is mental of?
Anyone who says they will haven’t struggled mentally out here either hasn’t been out here for enough time or they will haven’t realised they are struggling. It’s a game that is brutal a lot of it is mental because you’ve got to be able to walk around a golf course for five hours with your own thoughts. It’s not that easy, especially when your mind wants to tell you it well enough and you could have done that better that you didn’t do. You merely need to be mentally strong to carry out this job. I understand there’s been somebody that has walked out of the game for many amounts of time to get themselves inside a better headspace because doing it week in, week out, can leave a mental strain at the mercy of journalists and everyone watching on you.
Does more need to be done to support the mental health of players?
I think the more conversations we have about the well-being of athletes the better, because we put ourselves. We are always expected to be on form and performing, no matter what we’re going through. It’s important to recognise it can get too much at times that we are human and. And that is why the breaks we now have through the entire season are incredibly essential in regards to giving yourself some right time off so you can reset.
Do A psychologist is had by you that will help you cope with the stress of competitive golf?
My dad has honestly been a help that is big me with that side of the game. He reads a complete large amount of psychology books and he’s only ever a telephone call away. I do believe the side that is mental talking about my thoughts and feelings on the golf course, is just as important as the physio stuff. A lot of people don’t realise that it’s a part that is huge of game. Various other sports, you don’t have as time that is much think about what you’re doing, whereas in golf you have plenty of time to talk yourself into a hole. The secrets of the Tour’s super coaches
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
When I was a rookie, I was looking at what people were doing on the range and trying to learn as much as I could from the best players in the world. But every golfer out here does things differently. You shouldn’t do something just because the player that is best on earth is performing it. You should do it for you.
What’s the one piece of advice you would give every amateur golfer?
Spend more time on the putting green because it’s right. I always see amateurs on the range and then walking straight to the tee that is first. It’s like, how can you be prepared to putt well once you’ve not spent any right time on the practice green? When you look at the scorecard at the end of a round, around 50% of the shots were hit on the green that is putting. So, if you’d like to play golf that is good spend the hours there as opposed to the hours on the range.
